Leipzig are the more extreme side. Under Martín Demichelis, appointed in June, they have won eight and lost five of 13 games in all competitions. All five defeats have come away from home, including 6-1, 3-1 and 2-0 in the Bundesliga as well as the two 4-1 hidings in Europe. At the Red Bull Arena they have won five out of five. Saturday’s 2-0 win over Schalke was a third win in a row and has them fourth in the Bundesliga, three points behind Bayern.

City started the Premier League season with seven straight wins, then lost 2-1 at Aston Villa and 1-0 at home to Brighton on Saturday, a result that handed top spot to Arsenal. Three days before that they needed penalties to get past Brighton in the Carabao Cup. They have won only two of their last six games inside 90 minutes and have conceded 12 goals across those six.

Doubt: Maxime Estève, who missed the Schalke game with a knock.
Nkunku: Christopher Nkunku was an unused substitute at Schalke after an adductor problem, and the previews expect him on the bench rather than in the side.

Manchester City

Out: Antoine Semenyo (knee), who is not expected back until mid-December.
Selection: Phil Foden and Rayan Cherki, both on the bench against Brighton, are widely expected to return. Foden scored a hat-trick against AEK Athens.
